To my dearest Lucy, on her one year birthday...
Almost a year ago today, my girl,
you came into our lives.
With dark brown hair, big goofy ears,
and a pair of huge curious eyes.
And just like that our family grew,
from a comfy three to four.
And we embarked on a year that at times stood still,
and other times did sore.
Those first few weeks were hazy,
as we got into our flow.
You ate and ate and ate and pooped,
and from a peanut you did grow.
Occasionally you'd let me sleep,
sometimes a few hours in a row!
But mostly at night you'd cry and fuss,
until my milk would flow.
Then suddenly, my little "blob"
became a little girl.
We'd trade off smiles, and laughs and coos,
you were finally entering our world.
Your days spent snoozing were replaced
with wide eyes and a toothless grin.
You'd flirt with strangers at the grocery store,
You'd sit, you'd bounce, you'd spin!
Soon enough you were really moving,
creeping, crawling on all fours.
And suddenly our house felt huge,
"plug the outlets, lock the doors"!
Your taste buds evolved quickly,
you never loved that pureed stuff.
You begged for fruit and cut up meat,
but were clear when you'd had enough.
And I can't forget to mention,
your unladylike cackle laugh!
Mostly triggered by your loving brother,
and his hilarious riffraff.
Then one day you stood up straight,
and the next day took first steps.
I swear it happened overnight,
my baby grew quadriceps.
You're always on the go now,
I even bought you big girl shoes.
I'm sure before we know it,
you'll be sneaking in the booze.
But today as I bid farewell to one,
and look ahead to year number two,
I look back with a mix of pride and joy
for my never again baby, Lucy Lu.
