To my dearest Penny,
Words can not truly express how much you mean to our family and how grateful I am for your unconditional love. You were the first baby we brought home. The first living thing we cared for as a team. You quickly found your way deep into our hearts with your velvety soft fur and fancy, happy prance.
Bringing you home was scary but somehow we kept you alive despite the fact that we had no clue what we were doing. Thank you for not being mad at us when we dropped you on your head (so squirmy!) or when we had to leave you in the crate for hours to house break you.
Less than one year after you, our first human baby entered our pack. Thank you for gracefully accepting him, even though you knew you were no longer number one. Thank you for loving him as your own and for always wanting to protect him, even when your bark might annoy passersby.
Then our second baby came along. Thank you for licking the crusted spit up out of his neck folds because we forget to bathe him. And thank you for putting up with the toddler taking out his many emotions on you. You endure his chasing, tugging, screaming, even kicking, when I know you hate it. You never snip or put up a fight. You just jaunt the other way or play along.
Thank you for being a perfect example of how we can teach our kids kindness and love.
Thank you for being so happy to see me when we get home at the end of the work/school day and for waiting patiently to go out, even though I know you haven’t gone in hours. You never seem frustrated or bothered that you have to hold it because I don’t have enough hands to care for you right then.
Thank you for snuggling with me at night. Even when I can’t tolerate any more human touch, your soft puppy cuddles make my worries melt away. Thank you for listening to me talk to you, and not thinking I’m crazy.
I’m so grateful you’re a part of our family.
