Over the last few months I felt like I was constantly reading articles about the benefits of waking up early. But it wasn't until I had a conversation with some mom friends recently about how much it helped them get through the day, that I decided I needed to give it a shot.
Well let me tell you friends, 5am is where it's at.
My kids have always been pretty early risers, which meant we'd often get up around the same time during the week. And as anyone who works outside the home knows well, getting your kids up, dressed, fed, and bags packed, while remembering to put your shoes on in time get out the door, is chaotic at best. And yet you have to do it every. single. day.
So I decided to try out this early morning thang, and for the past month or so I've been getting up at 5am. Occasionally I'll hit one snooze button once, but for the most part I'm up and starting my day with the sun.
And it's amazing.
Waking up at 5am means I get to start my day at my own pace. It's not zero to sixty as it often is with kids. It's peaceful. It's QUIET. I take my time getting dressed and then spend the rest of my morning in the kitchen drinking coffee, listening to the news, packing up the kids lunches and bags for the day. And more often than not, I still have free time to check my email, and play on my computer for a bit. In fact, I'm writing this blog post at 6am, with no one bothering me!
It's me time, and it's so necessary.
Some time between 6:00 and 6:30 the kids wake up and the chaos begins, but I've noticed that I'm in a better mood. I feel less rushed because most of my morning tasks are done, and I've started the day on my terms which makes the world of a difference.
