Alright mamas, let’s talk about screen time. Like, let’s really talk about it, shall we? How much television does your kid actually watch? It’s funny. In a culture where we seem to value abundance and “more” in almost everything we have and do, I have found that time and time again, people lie or under-represent how much their kids watch TV.
And this drives me CRAZY.
Now I know why we do it. We have been bombarded with messaging that tells us that exposure to screen time is going to seriously mess up our kids, and no one wants to admit that we’re contributing to their ultimate demise. In fact, I was a victim to this myself with my first kid. The amount of screen time my son would get was my biggest source of mom stress, causing me to be pretty strict about how much TV he could watch until he turned three.
And then I had another baby, and holy hell, Netflix pretty much saved my life.
There is plenty of research out there that suggests too much screen time can having lasting negative effects on your child’s cognitive and behavioral development. And I believe there is truth to that. But I also believe that moderation is key, and making parents feel bad or neglectful for turning on the TV so they can cook dinner, make a phone call, or God forbid, sit the F down for a second, is irresponsible, and not realistic.
But ladies, it starts with us. Can we stop pretending that we all follow the rules all the time? Can we be open and honest with our fellow mama tribe, so that moms like me don’t spend three years freaking out over too much television exposure? If only more moms would have been honest with me, told me that they also use Daniel Tiger as a babysitter sometimes, I would have spent less time upset with myself and more time focused on important things. Like baby snuggles and red wine.
So share with us, mamas. How much screen time are your kids actually getting these days? Remember, there is no judgement here, and you better believe I'll delete any comments that violate that policy. Really, don't tempt me! ;)
Don't forget! If you're a Mom and running your own business, we want you to join us at our upcoming event! It will be an opportunity to network, share ideas, and connect with other like minded mamas! More info here.
