It's a rat race, it's a juggle, it requires a fair amount of caffeine, and it's certainly not for everyone. But I can honestly say, I love being a working mom.
Over the past four years I've come realize that I am my best self when I can be both a mom and a full time employee at a job that I love. Each roles satisfies me in different ways and I feel grateful that I can do both.
There's a lot of chatter about how hard it is to balance being a mom while working, and we actually talk a great deal about the challenges in our mom groups, but today I'd like to highlight what I believe are some pretty amazing things about being a working mama.
People say thank you. I do so much for my kids. I mean, I keep them alive for God's sake. And while I don't expect a medal of honor for my hard work, it would be so nice if every once in a while someone said "thanks, mom". Thanks for dressing me, thanks for cooking eight dinner options for me, and thanks for wiping my ass. But at work? At work, sometimes people say "thanks" and "great job" on a daily basis! And sometimes they even give me a new title or extra money for the hard work I'm doing. It's pretty nice.
I eat lunch in peace. When I'm at work, I can close my door and not be bothered by anyone at lunch time, which means only Monday through Friday do I actually taste my food. It also means that I can choose to have an adult conversation over a nice meal, that is not interrupted 50 times by a "but MOM!"
I feel like I accomplish a lot. Don't get me wrong, I do a LOT when I'm at home. And the stuff that I do is really important. But cleaning up messes, washing and folding laundry, changing diapers, and all the other mundane chores that I do as a parent just don't leave me with the same sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as completing a big work project or getting to the bottom of my unread work emails.
So for those of you who are working mamas, and are feeling like you're at the end of your rope come 5pm, just remember that what you're doing and the example you are setting as a working woman, especially for those little girls, is amazing.
And if you could use some reassurance, join our upcoming Working Moms discussion.
It's free, it's fun, and you can bring that much deserved glass of wine.
